“Apricity” (an old word meaning “the warmth of the sun in winter”), Singapore-based artist Jamie Png photographed flowers and plants growing in the city’s niches – alongside roads and pathways, or hidden between buildings and other architecture. Captured at night and printed on black paper, Png’s flowers, illuminated by streetlights, the moon, or perhaps a flashlight she carried with her, rise against the darkness as vivid, self-contained presences. Though beautiful in and of themselves, in Png’s photographs these flowers take on a quiet sense of warmth and hope.
